HEAVY MEDOC
A defensive fort built to protect Bordeaux, with some buildings still standing, such as the chapel, cistern and barracks...
Fort Médoc is a defensive fortification built by Vauban in 1689 to protect Bordeaux. Together with Fort Pâté and the Citadelle de Blaye, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage site that acts as a lock on the estuary. Some buildings are still standing, such as the fortified powder magazine, the guardhouse, the chapel, the cistern, part of the barracks and the royal gate with its ornate pediment bearing the royal sun. The view from the ramparts over the Gironde, the Blaye citadel and the surrounding hills is a must-see.
