CHAVAT ESTATE PARK
Remarkable garden with a Japanese atmosphere, a magnificent water course and a wide variety of plants.
The château, its grounds and the water tower with its "garçonnière", a fully-glazed gazebo, are works by Le Corbusier, built in 1917 on the banks of the Garonne River. Abandoned during the last quarter of the 19th century, this former vineyard owes its renaissance to Bordeaux industrialist François Thévenot, a specialist in the construction of hydroelectric dams, who acquired the property to save it from ruin and transform it into a remarkable garden. Bequeathed to the City of Podensac in 1999, the Domaine de Chavat park features a Japanese atmosphere, a magnificent 5.5-hectare water course and a wide variety of plant life in a composite style. Classified as one of the most beautiful parks in Aquitaine, it has been listed on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 2006, and was awarded the Jardin Remarquable label in 2012. As you stroll around, you'll discover fountains topped with bronzes inspired by Antiquity, a false grotto, a gladiator who has lost his trident and declares Ave Cesar, morituri te salutant, a strange group of marble statues - Le Mystère de la vie - set in a basin accessed by flagstones laid on the water... A superbly original place for a stroll, with a lovely view over the Garonne and benches where you can enjoy the fine weather while contemplating the château and its reflections. The château can also be visited during the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days).
