Grotto in the city walls under the fortress at Rions
Because there was a spring, the lord of Rions had a grotto built into the town's ramparts in the 14th century, beneath the stronghold. At least, that's when the ogival vault we can see today dates back to. Transformed into an elegant fountain, it became known as the "Grotte aux Dames". Legend has it that, during the siege of the bastide town of Rions by the armies of Charles VII in 1453, the latter quenched his thirst here. Hence the name: Charles VII's cave! Later, it was used as a washhouse.
