CHÂTEAU D'ARQUES
This fortified house, approximately 10m square and 24m high, is a masterpiece of Gothic art and military architecture.
First mentioned in the 11th century, Arques is described as a villa de Archas, or village. Today's village has preserved a seigniorial tower, which is now the church steeple. Arques was not a major stronghold when the Crusade against the Albigensians began in 1209. A priori, Simon de Montfort took possession of the village after the fall of the Château de Termes in the summer of 1210. Work was carried out around 1280, including the construction of a fortified house, a seigneurial residence of which all that remains today is the keep. This fortified house, measuring around 10 m on each side and 24 m in height, whose keep is a masterpiece of Gothic art and military architecture, was listed as a Monument Historique in 1887. All four levels are open to visitors, as are the two levels of the residential tower at the south-western corner of the outer enclosure. Children and adults alike can take a few quizzes in the castle's various rooms. Enjoy the view of the château from the park, and why not take a snack with you? You can round off your visit with a stop at the château's honey store. And don't forget to visit the Maison Déodat Roché (1877-1978): housed in the house where he was born, the museum traces the research of this historian, one of the first to take an interest in Catharism.
And don't forget to try out the Escape Game in the castle's natural setting, where a real crypt awaits you - medieval atmosphere guaranteed!
