MUSÉE DE L’INQUISITION
Museum showing scenes of torture recreated with mannequins in period costumes
History buffs and the curious will be delighted to cross the threshold of this museum (two separate buildings, one of which dates back to the 17th century) in the heart of the Cité. Also known as the "Museum of Torture" to be more explicit, we advise those of a sensitive disposition to refrain! Not only will you get a glimpse of torture instruments dating from the 12th century to the French Revolution, but you'll also be treated to recreated scenes of torture with mannequins in period costumes. Torture rooms, prison cells, animations, engravings and instruments of torture used by the Inquisition (an integral part of the region's history of Catharism) demonstrate the genius deployed by torturers to subdue heretics. The torture equipment is displayed in a realistic setting, and a tour filled with true stories gives you a better understanding of what they endured from trial to the stake... our ancestors were no slouches! We therefore advise you not to bring your little ones, unless you want to blindfold them and let them admire illuminated models of the main castles of the Cathar region on the second floor. The tour can be either self-guided (numerous posters explain the instruments and the context of their use) or guided. If you take the time to read the explanations, allow between 40 min and 1 hour maximum for the visit. The panels are in French and translated into English, Spanish, Italian and German, and videos complete the tour.
