LE GRAND BASSIN
An idyllic site in Castelnaudary for walking, cycling, jogging, sunbathing, and picnicking.
Whether for family walks or bike rides, jogging, sunbathing or picnics, the Grand Bassin is one of Castelnaudary's must-sees. Inaugurated in 1681, it was once encircled by craftsmen working on the Canal du Midi, where you can clear your head while listening to birdsong, admiring the swans, imagining the windmills... A postcard found in 1904 shows the Grand Bassin lined with 3 windmills. The Île de la Cybèle, built as a breakwater, was home to a guinguette until the 1940s.
