INSTITUT DES ARTS DU MASQUE
An institute showcasing the production of hundreds of masks, decorations, and costumes for a carnival in Limoux.
Guillaume Lagnel, director of l'Arche de Noé-Patrimoine et création, has been a faithful servant of theatre and heritage for over fifty years. Over the years, his creations have been accompanied by the production of hundreds of masks, sets, and costumes, which today make up the initial collection of the Institut des arts du masque. Housed in the former courthouse of the town of Limoux, this cultural centre invites visitors to discover carnival in a whole new way. Indeed, the town of Limoux has a highly codified carnival tradition dating back to the 15th century, and boasts the longest carnival in the world. This thematic convergence around the mask as a symbol of carnival led Guillaume Lagnel to imagine and develop a venue combining tradition and creation, modernity and knowledge. Inaugurated in January 2017, this Institute of Mask Arts, featuring over 500 Limoux goudil masks and numerous costumes, is the only one of its kind in France and has become a living repository of artistic know-how, a place of memory, destined to spread across the globe, confronted with other civilisations and mask rites around the world. You can't take part in the Limoux carnival without venturing to the Institut des arts du masque, to get a better grasp of all its subtleties. Every season, the Institut presents a new thematic exhibition and hosts temporary exhibitions by guest artists.
