CASCADE DE CUBSERVIÈS
Cubserviès waterfall, 90 m high, a must-see in Mas-Cabardès, a steep wilderness with interesting flora
After passing through three picturesque villages on the Montagne Noire, you can admire the Cubserviès waterfall, nestled deep in the mountains. Some claim that this is the highest waterfall in Europe (90 meters high), which is probably not true, but does not detract from its exceptional character. You'll enjoy a unique panoramic view of the Orbiel valley, the Carcassonne plain, the village of Lastours and the Pyrenees from the summit, where the Roc de Los Caïchos dolmen, witness to prehistoric times, proudly dominates. A wild, craggy place, with interesting flora. Continue on and you'll discover a small 12th-century chapel dedicated to Saint Sernin de Cubserviès, nestled in the forest. The hike starts in the village of Roquefère, dominated by the magnificent 17th-century château built on a rocky outcrop. It's a timeless walk of around 5 hours and 16 km, in the heart of unspoilt nature. If you're lucky, you'll be escorted by a multitude of butterflies. Be very careful, as the waterfall is not necessarily well signposted; the climb is narrow, winding and full of gravel, so bring good shoes. There's also a path leading to a picnic area on the banks of a stream, where you can dip your feet, but no swimming.
Departure is from the hikers' parking lot (obligatory) 300 m from the village of Roquefère, at a rocky narrows.
