ABBAYE DE SAINT-PAPOUL
Benedictine abbey with superb sculptures, a treasure trove of Romanesque art, an exceptional site and a must-see monument in the Aude region
An exceptional site, Saint-Papoul is a treasure trove of mixed architectures! Take a very square Romanesque base, add pointed arches for the Gothic, and sprinkle in a few bricks for the originality of the Southern Gothic. And voila! You've got a beautiful blend of styles, a testament to the history of Saint Papoul! And we haven't even told you about the church: here and there you'll find marble details (notably incarnate), and its choir is Baroque in style. The cloister leads to contemplation and calm as you walk through the ambulatory. The abbey also bears witness to the passage of the Master of Cabestany, a famous itinerant artist of the late 12th century, whose superb sculptures can be found here. A true marvel, we tell you! For all these reasons, the Benedictine abbey (whose first written mention dates back to the 9thcentury ) was listed as a Monument Historique in 1840. In terms of annual programming, the abbey organises events not to be missed under any circumstances. From temporary exhibitions and concerts to botanical discovery and creation workshops, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to discovering or rediscovering the abbey throughout the year. In the heart of the Lauragais region, Saint-Papoul Abbey is a true jewel of the Aude region's heritage.

Puis pour finir et découvrir l'histoire de l'abbaye, voir des reproductions de sculptures romanes, il convient de s'attarder dans ce qui fut jadis le réfectoire des moines, une jolie salle voûtée.
A voir.
A noter que durant l'été il s'y déroule un festival de troubadours.
