CENTRE D’ESSAIS ÉOLIENS
Wind test centre with a wind turbine consisting of a 30 m high lattice tower and a 25 m diameter rotor
This farm uses no less than 16 windmills to produce energy. The Nez au Vent association organises guided tours of great interest. You will learn the ecological and responsible approach of the wind-tests centre. The starting point of these visits is from Port-la-Nouvelle. Go through the rise of windmills between "le vigneron" and "la Baleine", go up the small dirt track toward the windmills and there, on the heights, a Mediterranean landscape overlooks the ponds, the harbour of La Nouvelle, and the canal! Be careful not to get out of the marked trails and respect nature, and you'll be in the wind! You may have the opportunity to see the first windmill in France, which opened in 1991! The latter consists of a lattice tower of 30 metres high and a rotor of a diameter of 25 metres, for a power of 200 kilowatts. Despite all its characteristics, the electric production of this first iron mill is ten times less powerful than the new ones. Today this pioneering windmill is the symbol of the approach to renewable energy on this Aude land.
