CAVES OF FERRAND
40 metres long and 2 metres high, the Ferrand caves embody one of the most unusual underground structures in France. Located a few kilometres from Saint-Emilion, they were built by Elie de Bétroulaud, under Louis XIV, on a hillside of his agricultural property. The underground is a real geometric labyrinth, dotted with niches and benches. He had orange trees, oriental jasmines, and even bird cages installed there. In the niches, shells were placed, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and marble, not to mention busts of Mars, Hercules, Caesar and above all, Louis XIV. He often toasted there with friends or meditated on the trivialities of the century. This man, with a romantic soul, devoted himself to poetry under the name of Damon. Although it belongs to Château Ferrand (property of Baron Bich's heirs) in the commune of Saint-Hyppolite, access to the caves is free. However, only the Grand Gallery was accessible in April 2018.
