FRENCH CENTRE MAURIAC
Cultural center with website in Saint-Maixant, organizing free events that must be booked in advance
Open to the public since 1997, the Domaine de Malagar was owned by the family of Gironde writer François Mauriac from 1843 to 1985, when his descendants donated it to the Conseil Régional d'Aquitaine. Left as it was by Nobel Prize winner François Mauriac in 1968, the estate invites visitors to immerse themselves in the world of this emblematic author. Born in Bordeaux in 1885, François Mauriac spent his childhood in Saint-Symphorien, where he decided on his vocation as a writer. Although his origins were in Langon, it was at the age of 17 that he discovered Malagar, which he inherited in 1927. This wine-growing estate - classified as a Premières-Côtes-de-Bordeaux - which he nicknamed his querencia (the bull's place of refuge in the arena) welcomed him at Easter and for the grape harvest. François Mauriac wrote his Blocs-notes and Nœud de vipères here. This novel, as well as La Chair et le sang and Destins, can be found on the property. More than just a writer's house, the estate is now a lively cultural center, offering a season rich in events celebrating the creativity and heritage of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Every year, the Centre François Mauriac de Malagar organizes the Prix François Mauriac literary competition. All events offered by the Centre François Mauriac de Malagar as part of the cultural season are free of charge, but remember to reserve your place to take full advantage of this enriching experience. Ready for a journey to the heart of literature?
