THE CONSULAR HOUSE - HOUSE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
This building now houses the Maison du Cœur de Ville, one of the commune's three town halls
Located at the end of the city, the consular house was built in 1651 by the contractor Jean Boyer according to the plans of Jean Cavelier, general controller of the fortifications of the province of Languedoc. It was subsequently extended in the second half of the 18th century. Its main entrance is located on rue Jean Roger, where the ramparts that once separated the town from the city were once located, halfway between Saint-Etienne Cathedral and the commercial port, two places of power at the time. Like many buildings in the city, the three façades and floors of this building were built in volcanic stone. The carved bossed door is monumental, as is the staircase leading to the wedding hall, the former consuls' hall. Following the Revolution, the Consular House became the Town Hall and remained so until the municipal services were transferred to the former Mirabel barracks. Today, the building houses the Maison du Coeur de Ville, one of the three annexed town halls of the commune.
