Round lock, the first in the world at the time of its construction in 1676, the only one of the Canal du Midi.
The only round lock on the Canal du Midi, it was the first in the world when it was built in 1676. Its technical and architectural prowess is based on the fact that it combines three different levels of water and not two like most locks. This arrangement allows boats to turn on themselves to take one of the three proposed exits: towards Béziers (towards Toulouse), towards the Thau Lagoon by the Hérault River or towards the city of Agde by the Canalet which has been connecting the Canal du Midi with the Hérault River for 300 years. Atypical !
