GALLO-ROMAN BASILICA
Gallo-Roman Basilica in Balaruc-les-Bains, offering visits to discover its remains during archaeological excavations
In the 1980s, archaeological excavations uncovered the remains of a Gallo-Roman basilica dating back to the 3rd century AD as well as a stone bust representing Neptune. The Romans, who dedicated a special cult to water, discovered the therapeutic virtues of the waters of Balaruc-les-Bains. They then built this basilica which, according to the hypotheses, was dedicated to the Roman god Neptune who became the protector of the Roman city. He still watches over Balaruc-les-Bains and its beneficial waters today.
