MONUMENT AUX MORTS
Monument sculpted by Jacques Villeneuve depicting the face of a poilu, tortured by fear, bruised by the loss of his companions.
Sculpted by Jacques Villeneuve, Grand Prix de Rome and student of Jean-Antoine Injalbert, the monument represents the face of a poilu, tortured by fear, bruised by the loss of his companions. Emotions transpire through this bronze, of which there are three copies: one in Bassan, one in the Museum of Fine Arts in Béziers, and the last one in Aniane. This portrait pays tribute to Captain Soulayrol, 38 years old, killed in 1914; to Joseph Saplayrolles, 26 years old, who disappeared in March 1915... and to about twenty other local men. With this simple inscription: "Look and remember".
