PORTE SAINT-PIERRE
Porte Saint-Pierre, the only one to remain of the five that gave access to Bessan, a vestige that allows us to imagine the medieval period
In the Middle Ages, the village of Bessan was fortified and organized around a castle which has now disappeared. The city walls were pierced by five gates that gave access to the city: the Great Gate, the Gate of the Courts, the Gate of Douilles, the Gate of the Hospital and the Gate of Saint-Pierre. The latter is the only one that remains today. In medieval times, this gate was equipped with a drawbridge that allowed the crossing of the ditches, now filled in and occupied by the Rue des Caves. A vestige that allows to imagine the medieval period.
