Canal du Midi in Béziers, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, with 9 locks at Fonseranes
The Canal du Midi links Toulouse to Sète. Its construction was a major undertaking, begun in 1666 by Pierre-Paul Riquet of Béziers, giving France a new communications route. Today, it's one of Europe's oldest canals, a mecca for tourism and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The nine locks at Fonseranes, a real curiosity, invite visitors to follow the barges as they successively negotiate the 21.50-metre difference in height, with the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire in the background.
