THE FORMER COMMANDERY OF THE TEMPLARS
A commandery with a keep to the north, farm buildings to the south and a former chapel in the middle.
The commandery of Cazouls-d'Hérault was founded around 1150 and consists of a keep to the north and agricultural buildings to the south. In the middle, an old chapel welcomed the faithful. At the beginning of the 17th century, the keep was sold to Monsieur de Montchal. He and his heirs - the Thézan and then the Carrion de Nizas - undertook major works to transform the medieval building into a bourgeois residence (destruction of the towers, appearance of mullioned windows...). At the Revolution, the castle was sold as a "National Property" and bought by the Despoux de Paul, they then extended it with a park. Despite all these changes, the monument still retains some traces of its medieval past, including the mark of several broken arches and two original staircases, visible from the courtyard.
