COUMIAC QUARRIES
Exceptional geological site, classified as a regional nature reserve, perfect for observing fossils in red griotte marble
This is an exceptional geological site, where fossils can be observed in red griotte marble. Classified as a regional nature reserve, the site is an international reference for understanding the crisis that affected marine species 365 million years ago. The quarry ceased operations in the mid-1960s. The quarry is said to be the source of the marble used to make the "red room" in the White House in Washington, D.C., and the Maison de France in Rio de Janeiro.
