THE COUMIAC QUARRY
A former marble quarry has been classified as a voluntary nature reserve, where fossils of aquatic species can be discovered.
This former marble quarry, made from Morello cherry limestone, was the scene of intense activity in the 19th century and was classified as a voluntary nature reserve. The extracted rock, nicknamed "Morello cherry marble", is of a very high ornamental quality and is an international success. It has been used to decorate prestigious buildings such as the White House in Washington. In addition to the production of marble, the site allows visitors to go back in time: many fossils of aquatic species dating back several million years have been discovered here.
