PICAREL MENHIR
An archaeological site at Picarel in the commune of Fraisse-sur-Agout
Picarel, in the commune of Fraisse-sur-Agout, is home to a remarkable archaeological site. A statue of a menhir, known as the Picarel standing stone, made of granite and measuring 3.60 m in height with a base perimeter of 5.50 m! At the top is an engraving representing an ouroboros, a snake biting its tail, symbol of eternity, surrounding an egg, symbol of the renewal of life. The statue has been a listed monument since 1949. In days gone by, shepherds used to climb it to watch over their flocks of sheep.
