LANGUEDOC JOUSTING TOURNAMENTS

Duel at the top...tinkling! Festive, this local tradition of Frontignan brings its share of shows and falls every year.
Languedoc jousting is attested as early as 1627 on the Ingril pond. The Cardinal of Richelieu, during his visit to Frontignan in 1629, witnessed this astonishing spectacle. Nowadays, the same traditions apply: two men - "the knights of the tintaine" - confront each other in a duel perched on the tintaine of their boat, equipped with a spear. They have to hit their opponent's bulwark to make him fall into the water.
