SARRAZINE TOWER
Imposing square tower in promontory, the only vestige of the Castrum still visible in Gignac.
The only vestige of the Castrum still visible, it dates from the 11th century. This imposing square tower on a promontory reminds us that Gignac belonged to the diocese of Béziers during the Middle Ages. Originally defensive, it was reused as a water reservoir in the 19th century. With an elevation of 18 meters and a mass of 12.60 meters by 9.60 meters, this tower, known as the "Tour de Gignac", is the most impressive piece of military architecture in the canton. The ancients did not hesitate to see in it the grandiose work of the Romans.
