GIGNAC CHANNEL
Canal de Gignac with a length of 8 km, used for the irrigation of the vineyard plain on 650 m of underground pipes
In the 19th century, a canal was built to combat the spread of phylloxera. The canal irrigates the entire wine-growing valley, stretching over several kilometers, to serve the 3,000 hectares of farmland. The canal is fed by the Hérault river and comprises an 8 km main section, as well as two branches on either side of the river, respectively 15 and 27 km long. Part of the canal runs underground, crossing the town from Rue du Maréchal Joffre to La Tour, a distance of 650 meters.
