SAINT-PIERRE-DE-RHÈDES
Church featuring two portals decorated with basalt inlays, one with a lintel bearing mysterious inscriptions
The priory of Saint-Pierre-de-Rhèdes, the oldest historic building in the Orb valley, rests on the foundations of an ancient Christian sanctuary dating back to the 4th century. It became a parish church in the 10th century and belonged to the Villemagne Abbey from 1182 onwards. Despite destruction during the Wars of Religion, the church was restored in the 17th century. Its two portals adorned with basalt inlays and mysterious inscriptions add to its charm. Considered a jewel of rural Romanesque art, the priory was listed as a historic monument in 1880.
