The Place de la République is also called Place Marianne because it is adorned with a statue of Marianne which was erected in 1878. Signed by the sculptor Taillefer and made of French stone, it is known as the first statue of the Republic erected in France on a public square. The Marianne de Marseillan was inaugurated on the occasion of the 14th of July 1878. It has been restored twice, once in 1989 and again in 2005.

La statue de la Marianne date de 1878 et ce serait la première statue de ce type a trôné sur une place publique. C'est de ce fait la plus ancienne de France.
