LA MAISON CONSULAIRE
The Maison Consulaire was the center of municipal life until the French Revolution
Under the Roman Republic, the consuls were the magistrates of the city. Languedoc kept this institution for several centuries. Built in 1664 by the consuls Gasc and Dijous, in front of the wall of the old castle, the Consular House was the centre of municipal life until the Revolution. Sadly, its corner pillar was used as a pillory for a long time. Nowadays the beautiful stone building houses the tourist office, in season. Note the massive character of the pillars that support the old vaulted arches of the building.
