MIKVÉ
Visit and discover a private mansion housing important remains of a Hebraic cult complex.
It can only be visited on guided tours organized by the Tourist Office. In its cellars, the mansion houses important remains of a 13th-century Hebraic religious complex. At the time, Montpellier's Jewish community was particularly large, numbering several thousand people. It included landowners, craftsmen, shopkeepers and doctors. The only part of this Hebraic complex that can be visited today is the Mikvé. This Jewish ritual bath for purifying ablutions, particularly before Passover, is fed naturally by groundwater. Situated 15 steps down from the dressing room, it consists of a geminated bay with colonnettes and plant-decorated capitals linking the dressing room and the bath. There are also magnificent semi-circular vaults. The synagogue and adjoining rooms, dating from the same period, make this complex a unique heritage in Europe.
