St. Peter's Cathedral with a baldachin supported by huge circular piers that once bore the coat of arms of Urban V.

Originally a Benedictine chapel built in 1364, this church became the episcopal see in 1536. Devastated during the Wars of Religion, it was remodeled in the 17th and 19thcenturies in several sections, contrasting with its austere facade and 14th-century porch. The Revolution proclaimed it the "Temple of Reason", before it became a military warehouse. Its most impressive feature is undoubtedly its porch: an imposing baldachin supported by enormous circular pillars that once bore the coat of arms of Urban V.

This cannot be described as one of the world’s great cathedrals but it is nonetheless an amazing space. The cathedral is spiritually absorbing and leaves one breathless. If I have a criticism it would be about their historical presentation: Montpellier is important to the Wars of Religion in France but there is no awareness of this.
