One of the oldest faculties of medicine in the Western world, located in Montpellier
The Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier is one of the oldest in the Western world. The building that houses it today was built in 1364 at the request of Pope Urban V to accommodate the Saint-Benoît-et-Saint-Germain monastery. At the time, it was part of the same complex as Saint Peter's Cathedral. It was not until 1795 that the faculty made it its residence, but before that, as early as the twelfth century, informal teachings were conducted there. In 1289, Pope Nicholas IV granted the title of university to all the teachers and students.
