PRIVATE MANSIONS
Hotels are built around one or more courtyards, often concealing magnificent examples of the architecture of the period
Following the religious wars, Montpellier was subject to numerous reconstructions due to its new status as the capital of Languedoc. The ennriched city was amongst others, the setting for the construction of several private mansions, beautiful residences that are still admired today. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the 80 still-existing hotels are built around one or more courtyards often hiding wonderful examples of the period architecture (stairs, ornaments, colonnades...). Some are accessible all year round while others are only open on the occasion of the Journées du Patrimoine (a weekend in September) or visits organised by the Tourist Office.
