THE CASTELLAS OF MONTPEYROUX

A visit of the ruins of the enclosure which ensured the protection of Montpeyroux, and which come from a religious establishment
This imposing medieval fortress (closed to the public) has dominated the Hérault valley and the village of Montpeyroux for 1000 years. A marked out walk passes at the foot of its high crenellated walls. Founded in 1070 by a descendant of Saint Guilhem, Bernard le Castellas ensured the protection of this strategic village at the crossroads of the trade routes. It was destroyed by the English during the Hundred Years War and then abandoned. The Castellas is a protected building since 1943.
