ÎLOT DE L'HÔPITAL
The city's historic former hospital was not only re-established as a hospital, but also as a "maladrerie" and hospice for the poor.
In the past, Right Street and Hospital Street lined the old city hospital. Its existence is attested to as early as 1356. At that time, the Consuls acknowledged that they owed Brother Jean Castel, then representative of the house of the Hospital, the sum of 50 livres tournaments. In 1696, Louis XIV re-established the operation of the hospital, both as a hospice for the poor and as a clumsy facility. Number 24 of the street retains an impressive 17th century doorway.
