CHAPEL OF SAINT-GUIRAUD
Chapelle de Saint-Guiraud, with a black Virgin carved from an olive tree trunk, an important pilgrimage site in the Hérault region
Built in 1491 by Lord Anglesiam IV, the chapel was originally named "Notre-Dame Joie et Consolation". It wasn't until the 17th century that it took on the name of the Black Madonna. Legend has it that the Black Madonna, carved from a dark olive trunk, was discovered long before the 10th century by a shepherd. He hid his discovery in his closet, but it mysteriously disappeared, only to reappear in the same spot where he had found it.
