ANCIENT CASTLE
Old seigniorial castle in Saint-Pons-de-Mauchiens with a plan kept in the National Archives.
The village was built around a rocky outcrop, or pioch, overlooking the Hérault valley, at the top of which was the seigneurial castle. The discovery of an inscription dedicated to Mercury, when the church was enlarged, attests to the age of the occupation of the place. Property of Guilhem de Montpellier, the castle lost its defensive character in the 16th and 17th centuries, as shown by the plan preserved in the National Archives, as well as the monumental gate giving access to the former farmyard. The castle was dismantled in the 19th century and its stones were used to build the winegrowers' houses that surround the medieval village.
