Birthplace of Gabriel-François Venel who was a member of the Royal Society of Sciences and Inspector General of Mineral Waters
Gabriel-François Venel was born in Tourbes (1723). Professor of medicine, pharmacy and chemistry in Montpellier, he was a member of the Royal Society of Sciences and Inspector General of Mineral Waters. This work led him to analyse all the mineral waters of the country with his colleague Pierre Bayen. During his career, he was a prolific contributor to Diderot's Encyclopedia, notably Volume 3, of which he is the main contributor for articles concerning scientific fields. Another milestone in his life was the invention of eau de Seltz, a sparkling water made from pure water, charged with carbonic acid under high pressure.
