Ingenious structures built in 1858 to allow floodwaters from the Libron to pass over the canal in an artificial bed.
Built in 1858 to avoid the silting up of the Canal du Midi by the torrential floods of the small coastal river Libron, these works of art are a masterpiece of ingenuity. These mobile aqueducts constitute a unique system in the world, by their construction techniques and their hydraulic characteristics. Consisting of a tangle of gates, toothed crowns and chains, they allow the waters of the Libron in flood to pass over the canal in an artificial bed, formed of metal caissons suspended from mobile carriages.
