ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH
The church of Saint-Etienne, the first proof of the existence of a religious building in Villeneuve-lès-Béziers
The first mention of the existence of a religious building in Villeneuve-lès-Béziers dates back to 983, in a charter of the Cartulaire d'Agde. But after a major fire, a new Romanesque church was built in the 11th century, around which the village grew. The slender bell tower is one of its most remarkable features, with an exceptional height and a lower part dating from the 10th and 11th centuries. In the 12th century, it was topped by two octagonal floors, which will be adorned with battlements and gargoyles.
