ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH
Church built in the center of the Castrum, often considered as the outline of the cathedral of Maguelone
This church was built on the mound overlooking the Arnel river in the 12th century. Built in the center of the castrum, it was part of the domain of the bishopric of Maguelone. Massive and austere in appearance, it is often considered to be the outline of Maguelone Cathedral. Its history has left its mark on its silhouette, which - from one wall to the next - changes from Romanesque (the base of the building) to Gothic (the bays). Its original Latin cross structure was modified over the centuries with the addition of several chapels, but it has retained its three-bay nave.
