LARREY MUSEUM
Museum dedicated to Dominique-Jean Larrey, the chief surgeon of Napoleon's armies
The chief surgeon of Napoleon's armies, Dominique-Jean Larrey, was born in 1766 in Beaudéan. A pioneer, he created the "flying ambulances", teams of first-aid workers who travelled without waiting for the end of the fighting with the help of horse-drawn carriages. Described in his will as a "true good man" by Napoleon, his bravery and altruism earned him the nickname of La Providence. Treating the wounded on all sides, Wellington, during the battle of Waterloo, stopped the fire when the surgeon passed under his lines.
