THE FOUNTAIN OF LOVE
The sister of François I, Marguerite de Navarre, married Henry d'Albret, King of Navarre and Sovereign lord of Béarn in 1527. The latter did not fail to show him the paths of Cauterets, where the beautiful lady visited several times, and even wrote a collection of stories and news in 1549, L'Héptaméron. His last stay took place in the same year, with his daughter Jeanne d'Albret, and his young husband Antoine de Bourbon. Sensing his end, the Queen urged her daughter and her son-in-law to go to the Fountain of Love, a source that she had herself renamed as her reputation for the treatment of sterility. Indeed, if the water was known to heal wounds, it also had fertile virtues which gave a curious habit to women wishing to give birth: there were many to come to "rub". The term refers to a kind of manual care… Cauterets, a pioneer of underwater massages! Unfortunately, the Queen died shortly afterwards, without knowing her grandson, Henri IV, who as everyone knows, will have no recourse to treatment against infertility!
