ST. LAWRENCE COLLEGIATE
Even if the origin of the Collegiate Church of St. Lawrence leaves much room for mystery, we know for certain that there was a fortified church in Ibos as early as the 9th century, which served as a base for the architects and builders of the place of worship. Thus, the main bell tower, which evokes more a keep than a tapering spiritual spire, was erected in the 11th century, while the current building as a whole is dated to the 14th and 15th centuries. Contrary to what many people think, the Greenwich meridian does not pass between the two bell towers but a few hundred meters further east, which does not detract from the majesty of the church. Visible from the A64 between Tarbes and Pau, it is much less so, unfortunately, when you arrive from Bordeaux by the D935, due to the presence of the sprawling Meridian shopping centre. Do not let this deter you from taking a closer look at the collegiate church and strolling through the medieval heart of this unique village.
