NAPOLEON BRIDGE
Bridge over the Gave de Gavarnie, a masterpiece in Luz-Saint-Sauveur and a mecca for bungee jumpers.
Napoleon III commissioned the construction of the Pont Napoléon between 1859 and 1863 to thank the inhabitants of Saint-Sauveur, where Empress Eugénie was treated for infertility. Designed by engineer Bruniquel and built by companies from Paris and Tarbes, the bridge opened up the Gavarnie valley. Measuring 69 meters long, 70 meters high and 4 meters wide, it was inaugurated on September 26, 1863. A 12-meter column topped by an eagle pays tribute to the Emperor and Empress. Today, the site is famous for bungee jumping.
