SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF THE GARRISON
century sanctuary with a gothic style chapel, housing a superb altarpiece and paintings, in the heart of the Magnoac.
In the heart of the Magnoac, 8 km from the village of Monléon-Magnoac, is a Marian city that is, to say the least, unexpected. A 16th century sanctuary, Notre-Dame-de-Garaison (whose name comes from the word "healing") is both a school and a major Catholic pilgrimage site! In 1515, the Virgin Mary appeared there three times according to the testimony of a little shepherdess from Sagazan. According to the wishes reported by the young Angèle, a chapel was to be built there. In 1540, it was built and until the French Revolution, many believers went there: barefoot and torch in hand, as can be seen in the writings of the chaplains. During the Revolution, the site was closed before being reopened in 1835 and many healings and "miracles" were recorded there, well before Lourdes. A high altar was erected on the spot where the apparitions were reported. Today the site is dedicated to education with 600 students, but the chapel, classified as a historical monument in 1924, can still be visited. In Gothic style, Notre-Dame-de-Garaison houses a magnificent altarpiece, the Poem of the Virgin by the Toulouse sculptor Pierre Affre, and the superb wall paintings of the nave dating from the 17th century. An inspiring site, in the middle of the countryside, which deserves a visit. The sanctuary is home to a renowned school. Masses are held every Saturday and Sunday. At the store, you can stock up on monastic products and spiritual books.
