THE LIFTING OF THE DIVESTMENT

The "lifting" refers to the Loire dikes and the Divatte is the watercourse that delineates the departments of the Loire-Atlantique and Maine-et-Loire departments. The last dyke of Loire extends over almost 16 km and forms a raised grave of 3 metres. Since the Loire was a turbulent and capricious river, it was frequently flooding, destroying several cultures and homes on several occasions. The dikes were never high enough and none resisted the bases of the river. In 1843, a more brutal flood than others came to cause dramatic damage. A royal order was then decided, and in 1846 the Divatte was declared public utility. The purpose of this lifting was to protect the populations, but also to be able to operate in the vegetable valley, the 220 hectares of swamp cleaned. The work lasted 10 years. At the end of the th century, the road that was built became a national road. Guinguettes settled there, which today became restaurants with the specialities of the Loire River, including the famous white butter. Today it has also become a "tourist route of the Loire del Loire".
