THE CITY
An integral part of historical Brittany and the Country of La Mée, the city formed from a site, Béré, where a primitive moot was established in the Middle Ages and a fair, still present, today. It develops around its castle, which has been redesigned, on the basis of clashes between Brittany and France, linked to its situation on the Marches of Brittany. The medieval town is between the xiiith century and the fifteenth century, surrounded by fortifications. These are its vestiges that are admired in the historical center, around the church of Saint Nicolas. The city, an important center of metallurgy during industrial revolutions, was profoundly altered in modern times. Expect to discover at every corner of the street houses with timbered, veneer, skirt towers and other architectural details that highlight the wealth of local heritage. The medieval city center is delimited by the ancient ramparts, which surrounded the city until 1860. La Maison de l 'Ange, the hotel de la Houssaye, the Porte Neuve, the Sophie Trébuchet Pass, the Tour of the Four Banal are some of the city's sights.
