Privately-owned Château de Clisson, listed as a historic monument in 1924, features numerous examples of defensive architecture
Built by the powerful De Clisson family from the 12th century onwards, the château later became the property of the Dukes of Brittany. Neglected by its owners from the second half of the 17th century, it was burnt down in 1793. In 1807, the sculptor Frédéric Lemot bought the monument and incorporated it into his Garenne park, then under development. The site was listed as a historic monument in 1924. The site still boasts numerous examples of defensive architecture, including archères, cannonières and assommoirs. We highly recommend a guided tour.
