NOTRE-DAME CHURCH

The first church in the city dates back to the 13th century, since Gaufridus, Bishop of Nantes, stopped there in 1210, and in 1681, the building was in a sorry state and the Catholics demanded a new church, so Louis XIV decided to participate in its reconstruction and financed the work. Even today, you can still see an engraved stone, located near the side door, dated 1684. But in 1793, the church was destroyed by the Republicans for the sole reason that the priest refused to take an oath to the civil constitution of the clergy. It shows the statues of St. Bartholomew and St. Sebastian. The black marble altar dates from 1717 and comes from the old church of Bourgneuf-en-Retz. Rebuilt in 1803, it was perfectly renovated on the occasion of its bicentenary in 2003.
