THE TEMPLE OF FRIENDSHIP

This temple owes its name to the friendship that unites the Cacault brothers to sculptor Lemot, who is the founder and creators of Clisson's italianisante architecture at the beginning of the th century. This temple is located on the Saint Gilles hillside. The former Saint Gilles Chapel and the cemetery were allegedly purchased by Lemot in 1808 (according to Chamard): it appears that the original project was a mausoleum in François Cacault (died in 1806) by his brother Pierre. After Peter's death in 1810, the project was reportedly taken over by Lemot, who thought placing the two Cacault brothers in the mausoleum. The Temple was built between 1812 and 1825 on the foundations of the former parish church of Saint-Gilles. The transept is added after 1844 to the image of the two cross arms at the former Romanesque church. It was ultimately Lemot himself who was buried there in 1827 (as well as some members of his family). This temple, classified as Historic Monument, is owned by the General Council. In 1995 he was the subject of restoration.
